In Memoriam: Emily Romo (2008–2025)
With heavy hearts, we remember Emily Romo, a 16-year-old from La Grange Highlands, tragically taken from this world in a senseless act of violence. Her life ended on Thursday, August 14, 2025, after she was found suffocated in her home in unincorporated Lyons Township, Illinois.
A Life of Promise and Love
Emily was a thriving high school teenager full of potential, cherished by her family, friends, and neighbors. Described by those who knew her as caring and bright, she formed deep bonds in her tight-knit community. One neighbor shared, “She was more than just a neighbor she was a friend. I mean, she called me her sister.“
A Devastating Loss
On the evening of Monday, August 11, authorities responded to a domestic disturbance at the family’s home. Upon arrival, they found Emily unresponsive and her mother gravely injured from stab wounds. Emily had been suffocated with a plastic bag an act of unspeakable violence perpetrated by 35-year-old Juan Carlos Perez-Abarca, who allegedly broke into their home. The responding officer discharged their weapon, wounding Perez-Abarca and halting the attack.
The attacker, her mother, and Emily were all taken to nearby hospitals. Emily’s injuries proved fatal, and she passed away on Thursday night. Her mother remains hospitalized in serious condition.
