In Loving Memory of Kathleen Devine
It is with profound sadness that we reflect on the unexpected passing of Kathleen Devine, a dedicated nurse and passionate member of the Mayo Beekeepers Association in County Mayo. In her early seventies, Kathleen lost her life after suffering a fatal allergic reaction from multiple bee stings , a shock that resonated deeply within her community.
On Monday evening, around 5:40 PM, Kathleen was assisting a fellow beekeeper near her home in Ballycastle, north Mayo, alongside her husband, Des. Despite having stepped back from beekeeping due to previous allergic reactions, her generous spirit led her to help nonetheless. In that moment, an unfortunate and rare incident unfolded when a group of bees struck, leading to a catastrophic allergic reaction.
Kathleen also played a guiding role in the local beekeeping community with her husband both well-known for their craftsmanship and for producing award-winning honey across agricultural fairs and shows. Most recently, they had showcased their golden produce at the Bonniconlon Agricultural Show.
Neighbours and first responders rushed to the scene. Lives were affected: some who tried to help, including her husband, were also stung and required medical attention. Kathleen was airlifted by Rescue 118 to Sligo University Hospital, but despite the best efforts of medical teams, she tragically passed away.
Kathleen’s unexpected death has left the North Mayo community in deep mourning. As Jude Walsh of the Mayo Beekeepers Association reflected, her decision to help a fellow beekeeper despite her own health concerns speaks volumes of her character.
An official inquest is underway, with Gardaí, the Coroner in Sligo, and emergency response services all involved. A full post-mortem examination will inform the investigation as it proceeds.
A Life Defined by Generosity and Passion
Kathleen’s legacy goes far beyond the tragic circumstances of her passing. She was a warm-hearted individual whose love for community, nature, and nurturing others shone brightly in everything she did. Her contributions to both healthcare and beekeeping created deep roots of respect and admiration in her community.
During a time when most would prioritise their own safety, she chose, rather, to assist another in a quiet act of compassion that exemplifies the values she lived by.
