In Memoriam: Mark R. Fetting (c. 1954 – 2025)
It is with profound respect that we remember Mark R. Fetting, a distinguished business leader, devoted philanthropist, and committed community steward.
A Career of Leadership and Vision
Born around 1954, Mark Fetting earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. His early career included roles at Citibank and T. Rowe Price, before joining Greenwich Associates as a partner. In 2000, he became part of Legg Mason, where he played instrumental roles in strategic development and acquisitions, such as those involving Citigroup Asset Management and Permal.
In 2008, Mark was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Legg Mason. His tenure extended through challenging times, including the financial crisis and significant fund outflows. He served as CEO until stepping down in 2012.
A Heart for Community and Service
Beyond the boardroom, Mark Fetting’s leadership extended deeply into philanthropy and civic engagement. He served on boards including Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Mercy Hospital, the Baltimore Community Foundation, and the Gilman School where he later became Board President starting in 2018.
Mark and his wife, Georgia Smith, dedicated years to running Camp Brightside, an outdoor program created to empower urban at-risk youth. Further reflecting his commitment to the broader financial industry, he also held roles with the Investment Company Institute and participated in the White House Summit on Retirement Security.
