Franklin Regional Student Suicide – A tragic loss has shaken the Franklin Regional community after a high school student was found dead Sunday morning on school grounds in what officials have described as a suicide.

According to Murrysville police and school district officials, the student was discovered around 6 a.m. near the gym entrance behind Franklin Regional Senior High School. Police Chief Tom Kusinsky confirmed the student was found outside a burning vehicle, which had been intentionally set on fire. However, the fire was not the cause of death.

Authorities stated that the incident was captured on school surveillance cameras and that, based on the footage and other evidence, the case is considered closed. Out of respect for the family, no further details are being released at this time.

Franklin Regional Superintendent Dr. Gennaro R. Piraino Jr. addressed the community in a letter posted to the district’s website, expressing heartbreak over the incident.

“This is an unimaginable loss for our school community, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the student’s family and friends,” Piraino wrote. “Our priority is to support our students and staff during this incredibly difficult time.”

In response, the district is providing additional counselors and mental health professionals throughout its schools to assist students and staff. Teachers have also been given guidance to help support grieving students in their classrooms.

Piraino encouraged parents to check in with their children and seek help if needed, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness. Families in need of support are urged to contact the Westmoreland County Crisis Line at 800-836-6010**, a 24/7 resource for those in emotional distress.
