NEWARK, N.J. (July 28, 2025) — Newark Police and U.S. Marshals were involved in two separate and dangerous incidents on Monday, including a confrontation where a suspect used a baby as a lure before opening fire on officers.
In the first incident, Newark Police responded to a home where a suspect was seen holding a firearm. According to officials, the man placed a baby on the front porch and told officers to “come get the baby.” As police rushed forward to rescue the child, the suspect opened fire. No officers were injured, and the baby was safely removed from harm. The suspect fled the scene and remains at large.
Newark Public Safety Director described the chaotic moments as “the fog of war,” acknowledging that the shooter managed to escape during the confusion.
In a separate event later that morning, U.S. Marshals and Newark Police officers were fired upon while serving an arrest warrant for attempted murder at a residence on 445 Irving Turner Boulevard. Shots were fired from inside the home at approximately 11:30 a.m. Officers returned fire. The suspect was reportedly killed during the exchange. No officers were injured.
Investigations into both incidents are ongoing. Authorities have not confirmed whether the two events are related.
