In Memoriam: Prunella Scales (22 June 1932 – 27 October 2025)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Prunella Scales, the beloved British actress whose iconic portrayal of Sybil Fawlty endeared her to generations of viewers. She died peacefully at home in London on 27 October 2025, aged 93.

A Life on Stage and Screen

Born Prunella Margaret Rumney Illingworth in Sutton Abinger, Surrey, on 22 June 1932, Scales trained at the Old Vic Theatre School and began her acting journey in the early 1950s. Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, she made her mark across television, film, and theatre, blending comedic brilliance and emotional depth in equal measure.

Her most celebrated role came in the BBC sitcom Fawlty Towers (1975, 1979), where she portrayed Sybil Fawlty, the sharp, no-nonsense wife to John Cleese’s Basil. Her timing, wit, and expressive reactions made the character unforgettable  and so cemented her as a fixture in the history of British comedy.

Beyond “Fawlty Towers,” Scales delivered acclaimed performances in dramatic works notably as Queen Elizabeth II in Alan Bennett’s A Question of Attribution, a role for which she was nominated for a BAFTA. She and her husband, actor Timothy West, later appeared together in the travel documentary series Great Canal Journeys, where they shared journeys along Britain’s waterways in later years.

For her contributions to drama, she was honored as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 1992.

The Final Chapter

In 2013, Prunella Scales was diagnosed with vascular dementia, a condition she quietly managed in the privacy of her home. According to her sons, she passed away peacefully, having spent her final days surrounded by love.

Her sons, Samuel and Joseph West, shared that she had been watching Fawlty Towers the day before her death , a poignant echo of her enduring bond with the show that made her a household name.

Legacy of Laughter, Grace, and Strength

Prunella Scales leaves behind a legacy that transcends her many roles. She will be remembered for:

Comic brilliance and precision : Especially in Fawlty Towers, where her every raised eyebrow, exasperated tone, and clever retort contributed to the show’s timeless appeal.

Versatility : Moving with ease between comedy and drama, taking on roles that ranged from sitcom to Shakespeare, from queens to everyday characters.

Quiet courage : In facing dementia with dignity, continuing to live at home and share moments with fans and family even as memory faded.

Partnership : Her long and loving marriage to Timothy West, which spanned over six decades until his death in 2024.

Numerous tributes poured in following news of her death. Colleagues, fans, and fellow artists praised her warmth, talent, and the special place she held in British cultural life. The Guardian wrote an extensive obituary celebrating both her performances and her personal grace.
