It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Zita Carvalhosa, a foundational figure in Brazil’s independent short film landscape. She died on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at the age of 65, after a battle with cancer. Her passing was confirmed by Agência Brasil and widely mourned across the cultural community.
A Pioneer in Short Film Advocacy
Born in São Paulo in 1961, Zita pursued cinema studies at France’s University Paris III, subsequently returning to Brazil with a conviction to nurture emerging talent. In 1990, she founded the Kinoforum Festival, Brazil’s flagship showcase for short films creating a vital platform that elevated countless national and international filmmakers .
She later served as artistic director at the Museu da Imagem e do Som (MIS-SP) for seven years, bringing her insightful vision to Brazil’s premier audiovisual institution .
Legacy of Mentorship and Innovation
Zita was celebrated as an incansável (tireless), inspiradora, and pioneira professional. Her influence was instrumental in elevating Brazilian short-form cinema and supporting new voices. Through her work at Superfilmes, her production company established in 1983, she championed visionary independent projects, including critically recognized films like Carvão by Carolina Markowicz .
Funeral & Commemoration
A public wake is scheduled for Wednesday, July 23, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Cinemateca Brasileira in São Paulo .
